The Journey Begins

… Next week!

The journey begins next week. But before getting into this new, exciting (and TERRIFYING) trip, allow me to introduce myself:

My name is Gloria, I am a 24-year old psychology graduate with a major in social anxiety and a minor in depression.

I am a PROUD Mexican-American Latina. Mexico will always be my home at heart even though I was born in California (which I also love, but not as much as I love Mexico).

I am also a proud Ravenclaw with a Hufflepuff heart and a dash of Slytherin.

My first trip far from home was to Cancun, Mexico when I was 5-years old. I don’t remember it, like at all, although I do remember crying a lot because I was scared of the ocean (STILL AM). Then at 13-years old, I went on a family trip to several states in Mexico, including: Guadalajara, Oaxaca, Guanajuato, Michoacan, and Puebla. Since then, I’ve gone back to visit family in Guadalajara once or twice. But my biggest trip was when I got this picture taken:

Look at that face. I was ecstatic. Behind me is Montreal, Quebec.

This was a year ago, my first trip without any family member, but not alone. My best friend and her family were kind enough to adopt and take me along on this fantastic trip with them and to be honest, this is when my wanderlust kicked in on HIGH.

Canada is so incredibly beautiful!! A bit of my heart stayed in that beautiful country and I will go back one day.

There is something liberating about traveling almost alone.

Earlier this year, I visited Portland, Oregon to attend the Western Psychological Association Annual Convention (DREAM COME TRUE) with a group of friends from school. Again, I was not alone. I did not completely know the girls I went with, but we became great friends after this.

Traveling without A family, even if it was not mine, was even more liberating! I could literally do anything I wanted. Without judgement. As a Latina from a small community, this is HUGE to me.

And now, after much convincing of my mother and with help from my young, cool, hip tia.. I AM TRAVELING ALONE FOR THE FIRST TIME.
